BBC iPlayer - How to do it right - second time round
TEA London have been closely watching the BBC's development of the iPlayer service since its Beta release. The iPlayer is the BBC's on demand service which allows UK Internet users to view broadcasts made over the past week, as a means of catching up on any missed shows.
When the service was launched for testing purposes, it was fraught with controversy, as the technology the BBC had choosen would limit the service to users of Windows only, and excluded a significant portion of computer users who used alternatives to Windows (such as Apple and Linux users). This was not the only technological controversy surrounding the iPlayer, where a number of the country's major Internet Service Providers were up in arms as to potentially negative impact this service could have on bandwidth, and could very slow down the internet. We look into how the BBC overcame these issues and challenges and also offer our opinion on how the iPlayer measure up to the competition, and the way in which on demand services like this will change the way we watch television in the future...
